What is Project Connected Home Over IP (CHIP), also known as Matter?

Project Connected Home Over IP (CHIP) was recently rebranded to Matter. CHIP’s mission is to create secure and reliable smart home devices and interoperability with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple’s Siri. By building upon Internet Protocol (IP), Matter enables communication across smart home devices, mobile app and cloud services. The organization also wants to define a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification.
